# Disconnect or remove a folder

> Stop syncing a team folder while keeping it served locally, remove a team folder from Hyperclay Local, or change your personal folder.

Source: https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/disconnect/

You can stop syncing a folder, stop serving it on `localhost`, or switch your personal folder to another location. None of these actions delete the folder or its files from your computer.

## Choose which action to use

| Action | Applies to | What happens to sync | What happens to `localhost:<port>` | What happens to files on disk |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Disconnect…** | Synced team folders | Stops syncing with `hyperclay.com` | Keeps serving at `localhost:<port>` | Stay in the folder on your computer |
| **Remove Folder…** | Team folders | Stops syncing with `hyperclay.com` | Stops serving and frees the port | Stay in the folder on your computer |
| **Change Personal Folder…** | Personal folder | Switches personal sync to the new folder | Serves the new folder at `localhost:4321` | Stay in the old folder on your computer |
| **Sync** switch off | All folders | Pauses sync across the app | Keeps serving all folders | Stay in their folders on your computer |

## Disconnect a team folder

Disconnecting a [team folder](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/team-folders/) unlinks it from `hyperclay.com` while keeping the folder in Hyperclay Local as a local-only folder.

1. Open the Hyperclay Local popover and click the `⋯` menu on the team folder's card (or open the folder's submenu in the system tray). If the folder's sync is [paused](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/sync-states/) and no account-wide banner is active, you can also click the inline **Disconnect…** button on the card.
2. Click **Disconnect…**.
3. In the **Disconnect `<team>`?** dialog ("Sync stops. The folder `<path>` stays on your computer and is still served at localhost:`<port>`."), click **Disconnect**.

After disconnecting, the folder card stays in your list and reads **local only · was `<team>`** (**Disconnected from `<team>`. Still served here; nothing syncs.**).

## Remove a team folder

Removing a team folder stops both sync and the local HTTP server for that folder, and removes its card from your active folders.

1. Open the popover and click the `⋯` menu on the team folder's card (or use the folder's submenu in the system tray).
2. Click **Remove Folder…**.
3. In the **Remove `<folder>`?** dialog ("Sync stops and localhost:`<port>` stops answering. The folder and its files stay on your computer."), click **Remove**.

Before closing the folder's server, Hyperclay Local waits for any open browser tabs or [workspace](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/workspace/) frames to finish saving pending edits.

Once removed, `localhost:<port>` stops answering. If you are still an editor on that team, the team appears in the popover as **not on this computer** with a **Set up →** link. To sync it again later, you must set it up with an empty folder.

## Change or stop syncing your personal folder

Your personal folder cannot be removed with **Remove Folder…**. Instead, you can move it to another folder or turn off sync or serving:

- **Switch to another personal folder**: Click **Options** in the popover footer, select **Change Personal Folder…**, and pick a different folder inside your home directory.
- **Stop syncing your personal folder**: Turn off the **Sync** switch in the popover. The sync readout changes to **Sync off** (**Changes stay on this computer**) while `localhost:4321` continues serving your documents.
- **Stop serving locally**: Turn off the **Serving** switch in the popover (**Turn server off**). The status changes to **Not serving** (**Turn on to open your documents**).
