# Open With

> Open .html and .htmlclay files from Finder, File Explorer, or your file manager directly in Hyperclay Local.

Source: https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/open-with/

Hyperclay Local registers with your operating system as an alternate handler for `.html` (**HTML Document**) and `.htmlclay` (**HTML Clay Document**) files. Because it registers as an alternate rather than replacing your default browser, it appears in the **Open With** menu in Finder on macOS, File Explorer on Windows, and your file manager on Linux.

## Open a document from your file manager

1. Right-click an `.html` or `.htmlclay` file inside your personal folder or one of your synced [team folders](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/team-folders/).
2. Choose **Open With** > **Hyperclay Local** (or pass the file path to the Hyperclay Local executable from the command line).

When the file is inside one of your served folders, Hyperclay Local:

1. Starts that folder's local server if it is not already running.
2. Opens the [workspace window](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/workspace/) directly to that document.

## Messages when a file cannot open

If the file you open cannot be served from its current location, Hyperclay Local shows a dialog explaining why:

| Situation | Dialog message | Buttons and what to do |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **File is outside all Hyperclay Local folders** | **`<name>` is outside your Hyperclay Local folders.** ("Hyperclay Local serves your personal folder and your team folders. Move the file into one of them to open it here.") | Click **Show Personal Folder** to reveal your personal folder and move the file into it, click **Open in HTML Clay** (shown when [HTML Clay](https://htmlclay.com/docs/) is installed on your computer) to open the standalone file there, or click **OK**. |
| **File is inside a hidden folder** | **Files inside hidden folders are not served.** | Move the file out of the dot-folder (such as `.hyperclay/` or `.trash/`) into a normal folder inside your personal or team folder, then open it again. |
| **The folder's local port is in use** | **Port `<port>` is in use by another program.** ("Fix it from the folder's card, then open the file again.") | Open the Hyperclay Local popover, free the port and click **Retry** (or click **Use port `<nextPort>`…** on a team folder), then open the file again. See [Folders and ports](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/folders-and-ports/). |
