# Offline, paused and viewer states

> What happens when Hyperclay Local is offline, when sync is turned off or paused, or when your team role is viewer.

Source: https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/sync-states/

Local serving and cloud syncing run independently in Hyperclay Local. When your computer is offline, when you turn sync off, or when a folder's sync is paused, your folders stay on your computer and keep serving at `http://localhost:<port>`.

## What still works without sync

Whenever a folder is offline, paused, or has sync turned off, every local feature continues working:

- Your documents open and save at `http://localhost:<port>` and in the [workspace window](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/workspace/), using the bundled offline editor runtime.
- Saves create timestamped [local backups](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/backups/) in `.hyperclay/versions/`.
- Local [AI editing](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/ai-editing/) and [helper programs](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/programs/) run as normal.
- If you enabled **Use my profile in files**, your cached `hyperclay.com` profile or local display name continues answering on `/_/meta`.

## Offline state

When Hyperclay Local cannot reach `hyperclay.com`, the folder card shows **offline** with the full message: **Can't reach hyperclay.com. Changes sync when you're back online.** If you launch the app with no network connection, sync starts in the offline state instead of failing.

While a folder is offline, local file watcher events do not trigger partial sync attempts. As soon as your connection returns, Hyperclay Local runs a full comparison of your folder against `hyperclay.com` and syncs any edits, new files, renames, or deletions you made while offline.

## Sync off

When you turn off the **Sync** switch in the popover:

- The popover's sync line reads **Sync off** (**Changes stay on this computer**).
- Each folder card reads **sync off** (**Sync is off for all folders.**).
- All folders continue serving on their local ports, and no changes are sent to or fetched from `hyperclay.com` until you turn the **Sync** switch back on.

## Paused states

Hyperclay Local pauses sync on a folder when an account, permission, server, or disk condition prevents safe syncing. When a team folder is paused (and no account-wide banner is showing at the top of the popover), its card includes an inline **Disconnect…** button alongside its status.

| Paused card text | Why sync paused | What happens to your files and how to resume |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **paused: plan inactive** | Your personal `hyperclay.com` plan or the team's plan is inactive. | Files stay here and stay served. Sync resumes automatically when the plan becomes active again. |
| **paused: reconnect** | Your sync key expired or was revoked. The top banner also shows **Sync key no longer works.** | Click **Reconnect →** (or **Options** > **Sync Key…**) and enter a valid API key to resume all folders. |
| **paused: you're a viewer** | Your role on this team was changed from editor to viewer. | Files stay here and stay served at `localhost:<port>`. Sync resumes automatically if you are made an editor again. |
| **paused: not on `{team}`** | Your account was removed from the team. | Files stay here and stay served. Sync resumes if you are added back, or you can click **Disconnect…** / **Remove Folder…**. |
| **paused: team unavailable** | The team was deleted or is unavailable on `hyperclay.com`. | Files stay here and stay served. Click **Disconnect…** or **Remove Folder…** when ready. |
| **paused: no sync access** | Your current role on the team does not allow syncing. | Files stay here and stay served. Check your role on `hyperclay.com` or click **Disconnect…**. |
| **paused: waiting for hyperclay.com** | The `hyperclay.com` server needs an update before sync can run. | Files stay here and stay served. Sync resumes once `hyperclay.com` updates. |
| **paused: folder missing** | The folder on disk was moved, renamed, or deleted. | Nothing syncs and **nothing was deleted on `hyperclay.com`**. Put the folder back at its path to resume, or click **Disconnect…**. |
| **paused: folder changed** | The folder's contents were replaced on disk since it was set up. | Nothing syncs and **nothing was deleted on `hyperclay.com`**. Put the original folder back to resume, or click **Disconnect…** and set it up again. |
| **paused: set up again** | The sync records in `.hyperclay` belong to a different account or folder. | Nothing syncs. Click **Disconnect…**, then set up the folder again. |

## Viewer state on teams

How a team appears when you are a viewer depends on whether you already synced a folder for that team before becoming a viewer:

### Viewer on a team with no local folder

If you are a viewer on a team and have not synced it to your computer:

- When you are added to the team, the notification reads **Added to `<team>`** ("You're a viewer on `<username>`. Open it on hyperclay.com.").
- In the popover, the team row is dimmed and reads **viewers use the site** (**You're a viewer on `<Team>`. Viewers open team documents on hyperclay.com.**).
- The team gets no local folder and no local port, and is omitted from the system tray menu.
- Its only action is **hyperclay.com ↗** (**Open on hyperclay.com**), which opens the team's workspace in your browser.

### Downgraded from editor to viewer on an existing folder

If you already set up and synced a [team folder](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/guide/team-folders/) as an editor and your role is later changed to viewer:

- Sync pauses with **paused: you're a viewer** (**You're now a viewer on `{Team}`. Your files are still here and still served at localhost:`{port}`. Sync resumes if you're made an editor again.**).
- Your downloaded files remain on disk and continue serving at `http://localhost:<port>`.
- Local changes you make are not uploaded to `hyperclay.com` while you are a viewer. If a team admin restores your editor role, sync resumes automatically.
- If you no longer want the local copy, use [Disconnect or remove a folder](https://hyperclaylocal.com/docs/disconnect/).
