Offline, paused and viewer states

What happens when Hyperclay Local is offline, when sync is turned off or paused, or when your team role is viewer.

Local serving and cloud syncing run independently in Hyperclay Local. When your computer is offline, when you turn sync off, or when a folder’s sync is paused, your folders stay on your computer and keep serving at http://localhost:<port>.

What still works without sync#

Whenever a folder is offline, paused, or has sync turned off, every local feature continues working:

  • Your documents open and save at http://localhost:<port> and in the workspace window, using the bundled offline editor runtime.
  • Saves create timestamped local backups in .hyperclay/versions/.
  • Local AI editing and helper programs run as normal.
  • If you enabled Use my profile in files, your cached hyperclay.com profile or local display name continues answering on /_/meta.

Offline state#

When Hyperclay Local cannot reach hyperclay.com, the folder card shows offline with the full message: Can’t reach hyperclay.com. Changes sync when you’re back online. If you launch the app with no network connection, sync starts in the offline state instead of failing.

While a folder is offline, local file watcher events do not trigger partial sync attempts. As soon as your connection returns, Hyperclay Local runs a full comparison of your folder against hyperclay.com and syncs any edits, new files, renames, or deletions you made while offline.

Sync off#

When you turn off the Sync switch in the popover:

  • The popover’s sync line reads Sync off (Changes stay on this computer).
  • Each folder card reads sync off (Sync is off for all folders.).
  • All folders continue serving on their local ports, and no changes are sent to or fetched from hyperclay.com until you turn the Sync switch back on.

Paused states#

Hyperclay Local pauses sync on a folder when an account, permission, server, or disk condition prevents safe syncing. When a team folder is paused (and no account-wide banner is showing at the top of the popover), its card includes an inline Disconnect… button alongside its status.

Viewer state on teams#

How a team appears when you are a viewer depends on whether you already synced a folder for that team before becoming a viewer:

Viewer on a team with no local folder#

If you are a viewer on a team and have not synced it to your computer:

  • When you are added to the team, the notification reads Added to <team> (“You’re a viewer on <username>. Open it on hyperclay.com.”).
  • In the popover, the team row is dimmed and reads viewers use the site (You’re a viewer on <Team>. Viewers open team documents on hyperclay.com.).
  • The team gets no local folder and no local port, and is omitted from the system tray menu.
  • Its only action is hyperclay.com ↗ (Open on hyperclay.com), which opens the team’s workspace in your browser.

Downgraded from editor to viewer on an existing folder#

If you already set up and synced a team folder as an editor and your role is later changed to viewer:

  • Sync pauses with paused: you’re a viewer (You’re now a viewer on {Team}. Your files are still here and still served at localhost:{port}. Sync resumes if you’re made an editor again.).
  • Your downloaded files remain on disk and continue serving at http://localhost:<port>.
  • Local changes you make are not uploaded to hyperclay.com while you are a viewer. If a team admin restores your editor role, sync resumes automatically.
  • If you no longer want the local copy, use Disconnect or remove a folder.
